There's a lot going on with this seemingly simple vintage 1950s dress by Fanshaw.  Fashioned of black polished cotton, the bodice front is decorated with swirls of soutache braid and rhinestones.  This is a crumb-catcher bustline with two layers: the underlayer hugs the body like a bustier, and the outer layer floats away from the bust.  The short sleeves are attached at the edges of the armholes and sit just off the shoulders.  The underarms are open so the sleeves float away from the bodice.  There are curved tucks at the front sides of the skirt that look like pockets, but aren't.  The dress closes with a side metal zipper and is unlined.  The bodice is completely boned for support.
