To say this dress is beyond rare would not be an exaggeration. Dating to the early 1950s, this dress was made during the time when Cashin had her own company and before she began designing for other companies like Sills and Coach. This dress has been deaccessioned from the Brooklyn Museum as part of the transfer of their costume collection to the Met. The original museum tag is still attached. It was donated by Cashin to the museum in 1964.
Fashioned of lightweight cotton in a grey and cream woven windowpane check, the fabric is edged with a braid-like border in burgundy, yellow, and cream. The border is woven as part of the fabric and Cashin has cleverly used it at the neckline and hem. The attached long belt is cut from the fabric border and inserted as a waistband. It is long enough to wrap around the waist twice and tie in a bow at the back, but can also be worn in other ways. The full skirt is pleated onto the waistband. The dress closes with hooks and snaps at the side and is unlined. This is a museum deaccession piece. The known details will be provided to the buyer. Note: We’ve shown this dress over a crinoline that is not included.
