To say this dress is beyond rare would not be an exaggeration. Dating to the mid-to-late 1950s, this blouse and skirt set was made during the time when Cashin had her own company and before she began designing for other companies like Sills and Coach. This dress has been deaccessioned from the Brooklyn Museum as part of the transfer of their costume collection to the Met. The original museum tag is still attached. It was donated by Cashin to the museum in 1964.
Fashioned of cotton this woven plaid is forest green with touches of navy, white, and yellow. The blouse has raglan sleeves with tiny fold-back cuffs. It closes at the front with mother-of-pearl buttons and has a flat peplum below the waist so it doesn’t bunch underneath the skirt. The skirt is full than a full circle. The yoke at the hip is lined with stiff pellon interfacing and there is piping at the seam where the yoke joins the rest of the skirt. It has a set-on waistband and closes at the side seam with hooks and snaps. Both pieces are unlined.
