<p>It is very rare that I can offer a piece of vintage clothing with documented provenance. This dress by Claire McCardell dates to 1958 and was donated to the Fashion Institute of Technology by writer Mary Cantwell in 1972. When the costume collection of F.I.T. was merged with the Brooklyn Museum in 1973, this dress became part of the collection of the Brooklyn Museum’s Department of Costumes and Textiles. In December 2008, the Brooklyn Museum costume collection was integrated into the collection at the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute. As part of that process, the Met has started deaccessioning many garments from the Brooklyn Museum costume collection that duplicate it’s own holdings. The dress still retains it’s original museum tag with details of the donation to F.I.T. I can also provide the buyer with internet documentation.</p>
<p>This dress is fashioned from grey wool flannel. It is very similar in style to a black dress by McCardell that dates to 1938 that currently resides in the collection of the Metropolitan Costume Institute (photo shown). Deep knife pleats extend from the neck and shoulders to the hem. An attached sash belt ties at the left side waist. The dress closes with a center back metal zipper and is unlined. It is very short in length, and may have been worn as a tunic in 1958 rather than as a dress.</p>

<p><span class="caps">CONDITION</span>: Excellent – Dress is freshly dry cleaned and ready to wear. There are two very, very faint spots in the wool that lightened significantly in the cleaning process. One is at the front bodice and the other is directly below it in the skirt. The neckline in faced in black silk and there are a few holes in this facing, but this does not show on the outside. Note: the thread at the underarms is brittle. The armhole seams should be reinforced with new stitching if you plan to wear this dress. The current seams are intact with no splits or breaks.</p>
