Claire McCardell was a designer of American sportswear. Her work is highly collectible today and many museums include her designs among their textile holdings. This dress by McCardell was originally sold by Lord & Taylor. It is fashioned of tissue weight wool in a taupe-beige color. This dress features one of McCardell’s iconic details – the long self-fabric cords that are attached at the waist and wrap around and around, then can be tied in several different configurations. A matching cord edges the neckline and ties at the center back over a keyhole opening. The long sleeves are cut-in-one with the bodice. The skirt features deep pleats – four at the front and two at the center back. The dress closes with a side metal zipper and is unlined. There are in-seam pockets at the hips. CONDITION: Very Good – Dress is freshly dry cleaned and ready to wear. No moth damage save for two small areas on one of the waist ties. There is very, very faint yellowing at the underarms. There are two small spots on the front bodice – one at the left bust and one near the left waist. One of the waist ties is longer than the other and it is unclear if this is original or if it was shortened. The hem has been shortened 1" from the original length, but the entire original hem allowance remains.
