Christian Dior was one of the first of the Haute Couture designers to introduce a ready-to-wear or pret-a-porter line in the early 60’s. Considered a step below the Haute Couture line but a step above the Boutique line, the Pret-a-Porter contains many of the hand finished techniques as the couture, but was made in standard sizes rather than being made specifically for one customer.

This late 1960’s suit was designed by Marc Bohan for the Christian Dior Pret-a-Porter line. The label is in French and also states Modele “Exportation”, so it is likely this was made for the European market. The labels are found in the suit jacket and the blouse.

The suit is fashioned of an unusual textile of olive green silk taffeta woven with pumpkin color chenille strands to emulate an animal print. The short jacket closes at the front with olive buttons and bound buttonholes and has tiny pockets at the lower edge. The slight A-line skirt closes with two hand stitched metal zippers at the back, one in each princess seam. Both pieces are completely lined in green silk, and the skirt is underlined in black silk organza. (I’m sure the jacket is too, but the lining is sewn at all edges, so I can’t see it.)

The suit comes with the original blouse and a matching scarf. The blouse is fashioned of two layers of silk georgette. The top layer is olive green and the under layer is maroon, which gives the blouse a two-tone effect. The blouse buttons up the back with self-fabric covered buttons and hand-stitched buttonholes. The scarf is made of the same two layers of silk georgette and measures 19″ × 54″.  Original price – $1200.00. All sale items are Final Sale with no returns accepted.

CONDITION: Very Good – The skirt was altered to fit the original owner. All 4 princess seams were let out and the hem was lowered and faced with a wool knit binding. None of these alterations shows on the outside of the skirt. They are only evident when examining the inside. There is one small hole in the green layer of the scarf and there are several tiny spots on the scarf.
