“I like to play with the fabric – the more I work with it, the more I see what it can do.” James Galanos, 1978
The work of James Galanos is as close to true haute couture as you can get in a ready-to-wear garment. Each piece is hand finished with the finest of details and intricate construction. This vintage mid 1960s set is fashioned of a heavy wool tweed in a mix of black, taupe, and cream threads. The sleeveless dress has simple princess seams with inverted pleats that open below the hips, both front and back. The dress closes with a hand-stitched nylon zipper at the back. It is interlined in silk organza and has a silky rayon lining. The matching jacket closes at the front with two silver turnlock closures and a hidden snap at the waist. It has a floating panel at the back, The belt is worn under the panel at the back and also closes with a turnlock. The jacket is completely lined in black taffeta. Can be worn with or without the belt.
