Richard Tam was one of a few California based couture designers whose work was on par with that of Galanos and Gustave Tassell. Born in 1941, he graduated from Stanford University in 1964. His first couture showing was a line for Spring 1965 shown in New York in October of 1964. The only high-end couture designer based in San Francisco at the time, his work was sought after by the city’s society mavens. He sold to high end department stores like Bergdorf Goodman and Bonwit Teller and exclusive boutiques such as Sara Fredericks and Nan Duskin. His garments were described as elegantly simple and expensive. Prices for Richard Tam dresses and gowns ranged from $325 – $1500 in the late 60’s ($2125 – $9800 in today’s dollar). Today, Richard Tam’s gowns are collector’s items and are in the collections of several of the world’s museums, including the Metropolitan in New York.

We are pleased to offer this exquisite vintage late 1960’s cocktail dress by Richard Tam for I. Magnin. This dress dates to about 1968, when there was a brief popularity of short babydoll dresses with flared full skirts. The dress is fashioned from opulent gold brocade fabric that is most assuredly silk with metallic gold threads. Everything about this dress is of the highest quality, as you would expect with a couture garment. Sculpted with princess seams, the dress closes at the front with a nylon zipper that is set in by hand. Golden ball buttons accent the front zipper opening. The dress is lined in off-white silk taffeta and the hem is edged in a bias cut band of silk organza. Original price – $375.00. All sale items are Final Sale with no returns accepted.
