This dress is a mystery, but it is definitely by a French designer. I’ve been sleuthing about this one for a couple of weeks. I have searched vintage French fashion magazines from the era. I have consulted with my vintage colleagues, but to no avail. Because the metal zipper is by Eclair, I can say with certainty that this dress was made in France. Because the colors are orange and brown, due to the unusual use of metal grommets and rings, and because of the length, I can say with certainty that the dress dates to 1969-71. The precision construction and hand finishing tell me that the dress is high end, probably a boutique label. I can make an educated guess that it is by Rabanne or Cardin, but I cannot guarantee it.

Fashioned from an unusual fabric woven to look like linen but with a rougher hand, the textile tests as a natural fiber – either silk or wool, or a blend of both. The panels are in two colors of orange and brown. Each panel is joined to the next with a row of goldtone grommets and metal rings. The entire dress in lined in rust color Bemberg rayon that is set in by hand. The zipper is also set in by hand. The original owner of this dress removed the designer label from the back right neckline, probably to avoid paying duty when bringing it home from France.
