Pauline Trigere was one of America’s most famous designers. Her clothing was always elegant and wearable, and she was known for designing with unusual textiles or adding something unexpected to her garments. This blouse and skirt set dates to the 1980s and is typical of the over-the-top designs of the time. Trigere has combined two fabrics in this set. The blouse and skirt cummerbund are fashioned of a tissue silk lamé in gold and black. The skirt is of a heavier black and gold metallic silk in a paisley design. The blouse is influenced by the 1940s with it’s deep dolman armholes that narrow down to tight sleeve cuffs that have little zippers. The blouse is gathered at the center front and back waist for a wonderfully feminine touch. There is a ruffle at the neckline. The blouse closes with a single snap and hook at the waist and has another hidden hook at the bust. There are self-fabric buttons at each side of the front neckline right below the ruffle, so there may be a missing frog or loop closure here. The skirt has a set-on waistband that is hidden by the attached cummerbund. It has deep inverted pleats all the way around and closes with hooks at the side. The skirt is lined in black silk organza for added body. The blouse is unlined.
