Jean-Louis Scherrer got his start in design by working alongside Yves St. Laurent at the House of Dior. He also worked at Louis Feraud before starting his own couture house in 1962. His was one of the few couture houses that was profitable in the 1980’s and 90’s.

This gorgeous cocktails dress by Jean-Louis Scherrer Boutique dates to the early 1990’s. It is fashioned of luxurious black velvet with sheer black silk chiffon at the upper bodice and sleeves. Two floating drapes are attached at the shoulders – one on each side. These can be allowed to float free, or can be tied at the back or front. The dress closes with a center back with a fine metal Eclair zipper. There are buttons and loops at the back above the zipper and at the sleeve cuffs. The dress is lined in black China silk.
